On 10 October seven deaf men joined the men’s breakfast at the Victory Church in Benoni. The message was interpreted by Wilma Chelius (daughter of Rex & Marian Bothma (D)) - fortunately not the only woman among the sea of men as there were a few other women serving the men excellent breakfast.☺

16 School Children baptised
Praise the Lord! Four girls were baptized last March. They were great witnesses to the other learners at St. Vincent School. More and more learners were inspired and also wanted to be baptized. On the 23rd September, it was a special day to
remember.

7th Deaf Christian Conference 2009
95 deaf and their few hearing friends (including 35 day visitors) from all over South Africa (also 2 deaf men from Swaziland and 1 Interpreter, Folami Ford from USA) applied to attend the camp so ideally located that the airport is ten minutes drive away. The weather poured cats and dogs on the first day but was sunny for the remainder of days.

News from Deaf New Life Church East - Germiston
On 5 April 2009 was the 3rd Anniversary of the Deaf New Life Church East. (DNLCE turned 3 years old on 2 April). About 40 Deafies came. A few deaf groups led the worship in different languages, English, Afrikaans and Tswana / Xhosa - lovely!

Mighty Men Conference 2009
About 300 deaf men (including 3 interpreters and some hearing volunteers) from all over South Africa registered to attend the massive Mighty MenConference for the long weekend on the farm of Angus Buchan (H) in Greytown. Dirk Venter (CODA), the main organizer was blessed with the wonderful contacts who generously lent their two huge canopy covered cattle trucks, several kombis and a car to transport the large number of deaf men from Pretoria and Johannesburg.

'Beauty for Ashes' Conference 22 - 23 May 2009

daughter of Rex & Marian Bothma (D), with the invitation to 14th Annual ‘Beauty for Ashes’ Women’s Conference. Marian, Chantelle, Val, Kathy, Kim & I went to Mosaiek Theatro, Fairland, Jo’burg on Friday night and Saturday all day.

William Mora (D) from Colombia - News from Overseas
March 17, 2009 - “We would like to inform all of you that we are working towards William Mora (D) from Colombia & Pongsak Watcharasampunkul (D) from Thailand to come to the US from June 30 to August 3. It is hoped that they can visit as many of you as possible in this limited time span. We are planning central meetings in North Carolina and Indiana to make this possible. I know it sounds like a lot of time for them to be in the US but it isn’t that long when we already have eight days booked for two camps from July 19—26.

News from Oversea - Uganda
While most flew home (after the 4th DMI Conference in Egypt, October 2008), a small number namely Brenda and Jenny, Ian and Neville, visited Kenya and Uganda en route. We were joined in Uganda by a couple of gentlemen from the US, Wes and Lloyd, who had flown out to see how they could help us get some buildings completed.

DCMA Students Outreach to the Western Cape
The aim of the outreach was to proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ and His grace to the Deaf. We saw how great the need for spiritual care is in the Deaf world. We were heartily welcomed everywhere we visited and when it was time to go, it was very hard to leave. We realized that God was waiting for us at each place we visited. We praise the Lord for the fact that He stays with the Deaf even after departure.

Jozi 4 Jesus
About 30 Deafies from the deaf and integrated churches of Jo’burg including eight from Pretoria deaf church attended Jozi 4 Jesus Rally at the Coca Cola Stadium (Ellis Park) on 8th Nov ‘08. Despite the imminent thunderstorms we worshipped together the great number of the other Christians waving the flags with “Jesus” printed on them.

4th DMI (Deaf Ministries International) Conference
At first four of us from South Africa applied to attend the conference but shortly before our departure two cancelled. Upon arrival in Doha, Qatar en route to Alexandria, Egypt, we
assumed to wait for eight hours before boarding the second flight. However, we were in for a pleasant surprise. An official at the airport sent for a shuttle bus to transport us to a

The National Initiative for the Reformation of South Africa
22 - 23 April 2008 hundreds of South Africa church leaders gathered in Boksburg for The National Initiative for the Reformation of South Africa (NIRSA) which was convened by Michael Cassidy, Founder of African Enterprise and Rev. Moss Ntlha, the General Secretary of the Evangelical Alliance of SA. Michael Cassidy emphasized the seriousness of the crises
confronting us in South Africa, namely poverty, AIDS, crime, corruption, the undermining of marriage, racism, sexism, xenophobia and the electricity crises.

To participate the annual ‘Pray for the Deaf Nation’ effort, the prayer warriors met at Deaf New Life Church East in
Primrose, Germiston on 10th June 2007.
About 25 of us met on a cold wintry day, attired (dressed up) in T-shirts with overseas logos, wearing hats and scarves representing different nations. Country flags and tea cloths with imprinted countries adorned the cupboards.

Farewell
