2nd Deaf Christian Conference
30 km North-East of Pretoria Friday 9th - Monday 12th April 2004

Hester feeding zebraWow! The camp was very blessed! The camp is beautifully situated in the bushveld 30 kms north-east of Pretoria, hemmed in by surrounding wild bush and thorn trees and different kinds of buck, eg. kudu and wildebeeste (gnus). Tame rabbits romped and even a tame zebra roamed on the campsite. We were blessed with a beautiful weather.

130 Deafies attended, (70 from greater Jo’burg + 26 from greater Pretoria, Gauteng; 14 from Durban, Kwa-Zulu Natal; 6 from East London + 4 from Umtata, Eastern Cape; 1 from George + 7 from Cape Town, Western Cape and 2 from Mafikeng, North West, including 10 children, both deaf and hearing and 4 from overseas and ‘over-rivers’. About 15 visitors came on Saturday and Sunday. It was great meeting and making friends with different people from all over South Africa and abroad.

On Friday all arrived safely at the camp from 12 noon till evening by cars, taxi’s, coaches, plane and train. After supper the evening started with ice-breaker by having all the Deafies and some Hearies in groups, sing songs in different languages, English, Afrikaans, Xhosa and Tswana in Sign Language.

EugeneMasoThe theme for the long weekend was “Holy Living”. Four deaf main speakers, Hennie Jordaan of Kempton Park spoke on “God is Holy” and Paulo Pinto of Jo’burg gave a clear message on “Sinful and Spirit-filled Nature” on Saturday morning and on Sunday morning William Warmington of Germiston preached on “Clean out the Temple” and lastly Heinrich Kutzner of Pretoria spoke strongly on “Sexual Immorality”. Surprisingly all the messages complemented one another. All were truly anointed to admonish holy living. Many came up in front for true repentance.

Two men received Jesus Christ as Saviour and Lord -Eugene Williams from DCBM (Deaf Coffee Bar Ministry) Jo’burg and Maso Bhengu of Kwa-Zulu Natal.

On Sunday afternoon 7 Deafies were baptised - Praisegod Zwane (DCBM) and Cindy Matome (DNL [Deaf New Life]) of Jo’burg, Jan and Stephanie Booyens and Thys Maartens (Deo Gloria Gemeentes of Pretoria) and Godfrey Bobe (North West). Michael Oosterhuizen of Pretoria made his last minute decision to be baptised.

There were activities in the afternoons during the time of leisure, eg. swimming, walks, chats and games. On Saturday night many excellent dramas were held by the different groups from all over South Africa. One funny game had all of us in stitches with laughter. On Sunday evening 2 DVDs with sub-titles, ‘Esther’ and ‘Jeremiah’ were shown on a big screen. (Paulo got these DVD’s from USA). Pop-corn was served - thanks to Paulo and Inge Pinto (D) for their hard work.

Three Deafies and a Hearie are from overseas and ‘over-rivers’ - Frank (H) and Sheri (D) Moran from USA are on 4-year missionary in South Africa.Fadzai Chikiwa is from ‘over-river’ Zimbabwe (she goes to St Vincent’s School in Melrose, Jo’burg.) Joseph Kilonda is from ‘over-river’ Congo. He is a pastor of the Deaf in a town, Lumbumbashi, Congo.

On Monday morning Phumie Jemane (D) of Jo’burg and Hermanus Engelbrecht (D) of Pretoria ended the weekend with a prayer meeting. After breakfast all packed to leave for their destinations.

Special thanks go to:

- our excellent team for their co-operation;

- the other deaf leaders of different provinces who made it possible for their people to attend the camp;

- the CODA’s (Children of Deaf Adults) and Elsabé de Langa from Pretoria, who helped to look after 10 kids (ages range from 3 - 12) during morning sermons.

- Abram and Maria Mohaya (D) for making beautiful T-shirts with the printed camp logo - a memento of the camp.
