St. Vincent School's 75th Anniversary

210 Deaf and their friends gathered attired in formal dress to celebrate St. Vincent School for the Deaf’s 75th Anniversary. Excellent food both hot and cold was served. Stephen Venter (D) was a MC.

Five overseas Deaf from America, England and Australia also attended. The evening was opened by Fr. John Turner (HoH) with prayer. Two speeches were given by Nigel Pickford (D) and William Warmington (D). There was an entertaining drama by the deaf pupils. We paid tribute to the dedicated teachers - many of them now deceased, for their dedication to educate the Deaf, giving confidence to them to live their life as normally as possible. The principal, Sr. Claudette announced her retirement from the school. We bade her a warm farewell.

The following day there was a bigger gathering of many more Deaf whom we were glad to have met after a long time. Many did not attend the special celebration the previous night.

The Deaf brought their own meat to braai and the salads were provided by the school. For entertainment a young deaf man boasted his skill with tricks on a bike on a tennis court. We gave thanks to the great organizing committee for making the occasion a big success.

William Warmington (D)
