The 8th Deaf Christian Conference was held in a beautiful vicinity of wine farms near Wellington for the long weekend of 23 - 26 April 2010. The weather had been kind to us - lovely and hot during the day and cool at night. The camp is up flanked by crown-like mountain and smooth-topped mountains on either side of it. That’s why it is called “Bergkroon” in Afrikaans = Crown Mountain in English. The camp is almost like a farm or more like a garden (in the new Jerusalem yet to come) with domestic animals (eg. sheep, goats, ducks, geese, hens with chickens, ponies and 2 black pigs) and wild animals which are tame (eg. springbok and blesboks) mingling and grazing together - amazing! The mother goat with her kid are so tame that they roamed through the dining-room - cute to watch. The ducks and geese even swam in the pool below. In the evenings these animals followed their master to the pasture to be fed ...

54 Deafies, including 8 children, attended the camp. We arrived by plane, coach and own cars from Gauteng (Jo’burg & Pretoria), Western Cape & a deaf couple from Eastern Cape (P.E.) and a deaf man from Kwa-Zulu Natal (Pietermaritzburg). On our arrival the women were presented with a cute little box with a small candle and bath salt each and for the men also a small candle and soap each. There were over 20 day visitors over the long weekend.

The chalets where we slept in comfortable beds and bunks are a stone throw away from the hall. The meals were delicious!

The flags from different deaf churches adorned the stage, reminding us to be One in the body of Christ (John 17 v 11).

On Friday evening we all joined in the hall to worship together in own languages eg. English, Afrikaans and some tribal languages - lovely to behold!

Before breakfast some of us met together every day to worship and pray.

The theme for the weekend was “Light and Salt” - the speakers were William Warmington (D) of Germiston, Hermanus Engelbrecht (D) of Pretoria and Phumie Jemane (D) of Worcester. Daryn Sutton (HoH) of Cape Town shared his dream about the yachts on the sea and the peace in the eye of the tornado which complimented William’s message. Amazing! William preached on Saturday morning “Finding Peace in a Country of Racial Conflict.”

Hermanus spoke on Sunday morning “Justified by Faith”. In the afternoon Chris Bothma (HoH) of Cape Town shared a bit of Revelation from Luke 21:36.

On Monday morning Phumie shared “God’s Word lights the way”. After these sermons the workshops were held every day in groups led by the leaders to discuss the topics.

During the free time Regina Passenbacher (HoH) of Cape Town massaged the deaf women’s feet with some herbs which helped them feeling refreshed afterwards - so nice to be pampered!

Some of the Deafies went for a walk through the field and had a fun at the Obstacle Course. Whereas the others spent many hours chatting (never-ending chats!) as we hadn’t seen each other for over a year.

On Saturday and Sunday nights the Deafies signed songs, games and dramas were played eg. “the broken phone-line” which was hilarious. There was so much laughter.

Although the attendance of the Deafies were fewer this year, we were truly blessed by the camp. Thanks goes to Johan & Paula-Louise
Lambrechts (D) and their team of Cape Town who organized the Camp well!

On Monday after lunch the Deafies either returned home or continued their holiday. Praise be to our God for the blessed camp and for our protection when travelling!

Start saving for the next year Camp in Kwa-Zulu Natal in March / April 2011. Please pray for Heinrich & Carina Kutzner (HoH) of Durban who will
organize the next Camp.

Bev Warmington (D)
